Over the past 60 years high-income countries have invested over 4000 billion euros in development aid. With varying degrees of success, these investments in low-income countries contributed to tackling structural problems such as access to water, health care, and education. Today, however, international development cooperation is no longer restricted to helping by giving. Instead, it is rather about opportunities, mutual interests, risk taking, and an inclusive societal approach. The "clear line", a term coined in 1977 by Dutch essayist and artist Joost Swarte, has become shorthand in the field of comics studies for the style originally developed by Hergé and the École de Bruxelles. The Annals of the War in the Low Countries is one of Hugo Grotius's lesser-known works. Grotius expresses a contrarian view of the early revolt, which he presents not as a united battle for the true faith and the ancient liberties of the land but as a protracted and painful struggle, not only with the great power of Spain, but also with discord, selfishness and religious fanaticism among the Dutch. To convey this complex and controversial vision of the foundational years of the Dutch Republic, Grotius chose the worldview and the prose style of the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus as his model. His commissioners, however - the States of Holland - did not publish the work when it was finished in 1612; it appeared in print posthumously in 1657. This is the first edition of Grotius's then-influential and well-known Annals of the Dutch Revolt since its initial publication. It presents a critical edition of the Latin text, a fresh modern English translation, and an introduction which covers all aspects of the work, from its conception to its modern reception, underlining the importance of reason of state for Grotius's thought in general.

Henry of Ghent was the most important thinker of the last quarter of the 13th century and his works were influential not only in his lifetime, but also in the following century and into the Renaissance. This critical edition of Henry of Ghent'ss Summa, art. 60-62 deals with the Trinity. The respective articles are based upon this scholastic philosopher'ss lectures in the theology faculty at the university in Paris and can be dated to slightly after Advent 1290. For Henry and his contemporaries, Trinitarian analysis entailed both metaphysical and epistemological issues which required serious thought and in these articles Henry treats active spiration, a property common to the Father and Son; properties proper to the Holy Spirit; and properties common to all the persons of the Trinity, namely identity, equality, and similitude. Articles 60-62 were distributed by the university in Paris by means of two successive exemplars divided into peciae. Manuscripts copied from each have survived and the text of the critical edition has been established based upon the reconstructed text of these two exemplars. Reconstructing the first exemplar was complicated by the fact that one manuscript contains replacement peciae of the first exemplar and these may have been the models for other manuscript copies. This volume should be of interest to those studying theology, philosophy, and book distribution in the Middle Ages, as well as to scholars of (medieval) teaching at the university in Paris.

The history of logic and its development during the medieval period. Radulphus Brito'ss Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis is a major work written in the early 1300s which treated Aristotle'ss text devoted to the theory of the syllogism. Brito, perhaps one of the most influential medieval thinkers known as the Modistae, examines both categorical and hypothetical syllogisms. In his text, based on six known manuscripts which are complete or nearly complete, Brito was critical of many of the theories of his contemporary, Simon of Faversham. It should also be mentioned that Brito edited his work several times. There are at least two versions which indicate Brito returned to this material during his long career at the university in Paris. This volume is the first critical text edition of Brito'ss Quaestiones super Priora Analytica Aristotelis and will therefore be of great interest to those studying the history of logic and its development during the medieval period.

The primary philosophical concern of the present study is the in-depth investigation of the concept of place established by Philoponus, putting forward the claim that the latter offers satisfactory solutions to problems raised by Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition regarding the nature of place. Philoponus's account proposes a specific physical model of how physical bodies exist and move in place, and regards place as an intrinsic reality of the physical cosmos. A well-preserved early Middle Palaeolithic site set against a wider northwestern European context The shift from Lower to Middle Palaeolithic in northwestern Europe (dated to around 300,000-250,000 years ago) remains poorly understood and underexplored compared to more recent archaeological transitions. During this period, stone tool technologies underwent significant changes but the limited number of known sites and the general low spatio-temporal resolution of the archaeological record in many cases has impeded detailed behavioural inferences. Brickyard-quarrying activities at Kesselt-Op de Schans (Limburg, Belgium) led to the discovery and excavation of a well-preserved early Middle Palaeolithic level buried beneath a 10 m thick loess-palaeosol sequence. The present volume offers a comprehensive report on the site, dated to around 280,000 years ago, set against a wider northwestern European context. An in-depth study of the lithic assemblage, including an extensive refitting analysis, provides detailed information on the technological behaviour of prehistoric hominins in the Meuse basin during this crucial time period.
